I approach certifications with intent and integrity. I have never contributed to the dilution of what professional certifications are meant to represent in the workforce. In some cases, certification requirements were mandated by Department of Defense policy rather than operational necessity—a systemic limitation rather than an individual choice.
In most instances, I earned certifications either to meet the requirements of my assigned role or to qualify for advancement into a desired position. The U.S. Army’s training philosophy emphasizes developing broadly capable professionals—often described as a “Swiss Army knife”—and placing them where operational needs are greatest. When I held certifications for roles in which I did not ultimately serve, I allowed those credentials to expire following my retirement from the U.S. Army.
My first civilian role after retirement was offered based on my Linux and Security+ experience, not the breadth of advanced certifications I had previously earned. Since that time, I have intentionally aligned my certifications with the technologies I actively use and support, focusing on depth of expertise rather than volume.
All certifications I maintain or pursue are supported by hands-on experience and formal training—never test dumps—and are selected to strengthen both my current capabilities and future technical growth.
